Here’s to 2014 – My NEW Go-To Green Smoothie

Green Smoothie

“New Year, New You” …

Sound familiar? I feel like everywhere I go lately (online or in the real world) people are talking about all the changes they are going to make this year. I even posted my NY Resolutions in the hopes that I can make some slight changes to keep me on track this year.

But I don’t think these changes will make a ‘new me’. Maybe a healthier and happier version of me – but not a NEW me. I think a lot of people get caught up in the hype of the New Year and use NY Resolutions in both good and bad ways.

Good

  • We make workout schedules and healthy meal plans.
  • We create budgets to track our spending and be cautious of our money.
  • We make travel plans to visit friends and family.
  • We have drive to accomplish, well, anything.

Bad

  • We restrict ourselves from going out with friends, because we don’t want to drink or overeat (and drinking water at the bar isn’t cool).
  • We get bummed when after a week of hard work, the number on the scale has gone up and not down.
  • We quit when we see no progress.. and go back to our old ways.
  • We feel like we let people down.
  • We miss out on things for the sole purpose of staying true to resolutions.

We don’t need to completely change our routines or our lives just because it is a New Year. I hope the resolutions you made for yourself this year (if you made any) are attainable and that you don’t give them a time limit. Don’t get trapped in them either.. it’s ok to miss a workout or have a slice of pizza. Work on these resolutions throughout the year and let yourself enjoy the year ahead.

Change doesn't happen overnight

Like I said in my previous post (here), I have never actually written down my NY resolutions so this is kind of new to me. In years before, I would just think of one to myself  and just try to go with it. I tried to eat clean, workout, and be more patient, but I wasn’t tearing myself down if I let myself slip a bit.

So here’s to 2014! I look forward to what the year has in store for me…

If you are looking for a green smoothie recipe to kick start your healthy eating plan, look no further. I recently started making this green smoothie and I have quickly become addicted to it. Before I go any further.. is it still a smoothie if I use water instead of milk? Does milk make a smoothie a smoothie??

Anywho, I make one of these every couple of days (which is odd for me because I usually like to switch up my smoothie recipes). It doesn’t have protein powder in it but it is still a power smoothie that I know you will love! Feel free to play with the recipe to suite your taste buds.

  1. yes to all of this! i used to feel so much guilt if i had a ‘bad meal’ but then i remembered “one bad meal won’t make me gain weight, just like one healthy meal won’t make me skinny”.

  2. I usually use a half cup of almond milk, and the rest water. I think it’s definitely still a smoothie! I completely agree with your balanced approach – while I like the opportunity to make goals and have people be newly inspired, if it leads to beating yourself up or too intense a focus on your goals, it’s probably detrimental overall.

  3. I love NYRs but you make a good point of how they can be restrictive!

  4. I don’t make resolutions at all… I sort of feel like life goals should be year round in the first place… However, I do love that people do truly take some time to make attainable goals and achieve them! That’s always awesome. I used to make green smoothies for breakfast ALLL the time and I recently slowed that down… I may have to hop back on that train! This looks refreshing and YUMMY!

  5. Love your totally sensible approach to resolutions – so many people set such impossible goals and then give up quickly when they realize how unattainable those goals were. And hey – what better way to start a healthy new year than with this fabulous smoothie!?!? High-five to you!!! Thanks for the inspiration! :D

  6. I’m obsessed with green smoothies lately…although I have yet to try it with kale so I guess I should be trying it asap now that I’ve seen this. I’m not a big resolutions fan, but I do use it as a time to check in with anything I could improve upon.

  7. You hit the nail on the head with the new year’s resolutions issue! I’m going to share it with some of my family members. I can’t wait to try your smoothie! I never thought of adding dates before!
